Interior vs Exterior Detail: Which One Do You Actually Need?

The two most-booked services do very different things. Here's how to pick — or when to just book both.

# Interior vs Exterior Detail: Which One Do You Actually Need? Most customers who call us for the first time ask the same question: "Do I need an interior detail or an exterior detail?" Both are foundational services, they cost about the same, and they take about the same time — but they solve completely different problems. Here's how to figure out which one to book first. ## What an exterior detail actually does An exterior detail is a deep paint, wheel, and trim reset. It's not a car wash. In a typical Prime exterior: - Wheels get cleaned first (dirtiest surface, would contaminate everything else if done later) - Foam-cannon pre-soak lifts and floats surface dirt off the paint - Two-bucket hand wash with pH-neutral shampoo - Iron fallout dissolver on paint and wheels (dissolves bonded brake dust — this is why paint feels smooth after) - Tar and bug spot treatment - Full pressure rinse - Hand dry with plush microfibers (no towel swirl marks) - Trim UV protectant, tire dressing - Wax or spray sealant for 1-3 months of protection **Book an exterior detail when:** the paint looks dull, water no longer beads, wheels have a stubborn haze, or there's visible bug or bird contamination that hasn't come off in washes. ## What an interior detail actually does An interior detail is a full cabin reset: - Every removable item comes out (mats, seat, trunk contents) - Full HEPA vacuum — under seats, seat rails, trunk cavity - Dashboard, console, door panels wiped with pH-neutral APC - Air vents dusted and blown clean - Interior glass polished streak-free - Carpet and cloth seats hot-water extracted (if opted in) - Leather cleaned and conditioned - Headliner spot-treated - Cabin deodorized - Air freshener applied **Book an interior detail when:** the cabin smells, you have visible stains on seats or carpet, there's kid/pet residue, or you just haven't done a deep interior in 6+ months. ## The decision framework Ask yourself two questions: 1. **When someone looks at your car in a parking lot, what do they see?** If they see dull paint, dirty wheels, and swirls — book the exterior first. 2. **When you get in and close the door, what do you notice?** If you notice smell, stickiness, dust, or crumbs — book the interior first. If the answer is "both," that's when the Full Detail Package makes sense — you save money vs. booking them separately, and you only give up one appointment window. ## The one situation people miss If you're **selling your car** in the next 60 days, book a full detail (both). The first thing every used-car shopper does is open the driver's door and inhale — cabin smell is the fastest way to lose $500-$2000 off your asking price. A $150 detail is the single highest-ROI thing you can do to prep a used car for sale. ## Loudoun County–specific notes - **Route 7 commuters** should prioritize exterior more often (highway film, bug load). - **Kids-in-Ashburn / Brambleton / Stone Ridge families** should prioritize interior more often. - **Purcellville / Middleburg / Round Hill** country drivers see more paint contamination from dust and pollen — exterior + spray sealant every few months keeps it under control. Still not sure? Text us at 703-826-4074 and we'll walk you through it, or just [book the Full Detail](/services/full-detail) and skip the decision.
